HOW WE BUILD
UNDERSTANDING WHAT WE'RE BUILDING.
Before anything reaches the workshop, we need to understand more than what it should look like. We review the creative concept alongside dimensions, venue information, programme requirements, budgets, timelines and the intended lifespan of the build. We look at where it will be installed, how people will interact with it and what other technical or architectural elements need to be incorporated around it.
Sometimes we receive a fully developed design package. Sometimes we begin with renders, sketches or an early creative direction that still needs technical development. Our role can start at either point. We interrogate the details, identify areas that need resolving and work with the creative team to establish a practical route from the design on screen to the finished physical environment.
DESIGN + TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT
BEFORE WE BUILD IT, WE WORK OUT HOW.
A beautiful render does not tell a carpenter how to construct something, a metalworker where the supporting frame needs to sit or an installation team how the finished piece will be assembled on site. Between creative design and fabrication sits a critical stage of technical development.
Our teams translate creative information into drawings, details and fabrication methodologies that the workshop can work from. Dimensions are resolved, structures developed, materials specified and components divided according to how they will be manufactured, transported and assembled. It is where creative ambition meets the realities of making something properly.
PLANNING THE BUILD.
Good fabrication depends on good information. Technical drawings allow different workshop disciplines to understand how their work connects, while production planning determines the sequence in which those elements need to be manufactured. A build may move between metalwork, carpentry, CNC machining, graphics, scenic finishing and specialist suppliers before the individual components finally come together.
At the same time, our project teams plan procurement, engineering requirements, approvals, samples, production schedules and workshop resources. Decisions made at this stage can simplify installation, reduce unnecessary material, improve finish quality and prevent problems appearing much later on site. The objective is not to complicate the creative idea with technical thinking; it is to use technical thinking to make the creative idea possible.
MATERIALS + METHODS
THE RIGHT WAY TO BUILD IT.
There is rarely only one way to fabricate something. The same visual result might be achieved using timber, steel, aluminium, acrylic, foam, fibreglass, fabric, printed surfaces or a combination of several different materials. Choosing between them requires an understanding of far more than appearance.
Weight, structural performance, finish, durability, fire requirements, transportation, installation time, future reuse and budget can all influence the construction method. Our teams use their knowledge of materials and fabrication processes to determine what should sit underneath the finish as carefully as they consider what the audience will eventually see.
INSIDE THE WORKSHOPS.
Our workshops bring multiple fabrication disciplines together under one production environment. Carpentry and joinery sit alongside metal fabrication, CNC machining, digital sculpture, scenic painting, graphics, textiles and specialist finishing, allowing complex builds to move between teams without losing sight of the complete project.
That breadth of capability matters because scenic fabrication rarely belongs to a single trade. A feature may begin with a welded steel subframe, move into carpentry for its external form, pass through CNC for detailed components and finally reach the scenic team for texture, colour and finishing. Bringing those disciplines together allows each team to understand what comes before and after their part of the process — and to solve problems collectively rather than in isolation.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE BUILD
BUILT BY SPECIALISTS.
Machines can cut, print and shape with extraordinary accuracy, but scenic fabrication remains a highly skilled human process. It takes experience to understand how a material will behave, how a finish will react under lighting, where tolerances need to be allowed and when something that works perfectly on a drawing needs to be approached differently in the workshop.
Our production teams combine traditional craft with contemporary manufacturing technology. Carpenters, metalworkers, CNC operators, sculptors, scenic artists, graphic specialists, technical designers, project managers and installation crews each bring a different perspective to the build, working towards one finished result.
CHECK. TEST. REFINE.
Quality control happens throughout production rather than being left until the end. Materials and finishes can be sampled before full production begins, critical details can be mocked up and complex components can be test assembled in the workshop. This gives our teams — and where required our clients and designers — the opportunity to review how something looks and performs before it reaches site.
As fabrication progresses, dimensions, finishes, connections and completed elements are checked against the approved information. Larger structures may be partially or fully assembled before dispatch, particularly where installation time is limited or the build involves multiple interconnecting components. Finding and resolving an issue in the workshop is considerably easier than discovering it during an overnight installation inside a finished venue.
INSTALLATION PLANNING
THE VENUE CHANGES THE BUILD.
A scenic element does not simply need to fit into its final location. It needs to get there. Loading dock dimensions, freight lifts, door openings, floor loading, ceiling heights, rigging restrictions, working hours and available installation time can fundamentally change how something should be fabricated.
That information feeds back into the build from the beginning. Large structures may need to divide into transportable sections. Connections may need to be designed for rapid assembly. Delicate finishes may need additional protection. In venues where installation windows are extremely short, far more of the assembly may happen in our workshops before anything is loaded onto a truck.
FROM WORKSHOP FLOOR TO SHOW FLOOR.
Before dispatch, finished elements are checked, labelled and packed according to the order in which they will be required on site. Transport and installation sequences are planned around venue access and the wider production schedule, helping our crews move efficiently from unloading through assembly, finishing and final handover.
Once on site, our installation teams work around existing architecture, technical production, flooring, furniture and other contractors. Finished surfaces are protected, work areas managed and installation methods adapted to the realities of the venue. The final stage is the detail work: closing joints, touching up finishes, aligning graphics, cleaning surfaces and making sure the environment looks like one finished build rather than a collection of components that arrived on separate trucks.
WORKING TOGETHER
GOOD BUILDS DON'T HAPPEN IN ISOLATION.
Scenic is only one part of a much larger production environment. Lighting may need to disappear inside a scenic structure. LED screens need accurate openings and ventilation. Speakers, power, AV equipment and control systems need access. Furniture layouts influence dimensions. Venue rules affect construction. Other contractors may be working in exactly the same space at exactly the same time.
Our project and installation teams coordinate closely with designers, agencies, production teams, venues, engineers, technical suppliers and other appointed contractors throughout the process. Understanding where everyone else's work meets ours helps us resolve interfaces early and keeps the finished environment clean, practical and true to the original design.
BUILT TO COME DOWN, TOO.
Temporary construction has another requirement that permanent construction does not: almost everything we install eventually needs to be removed again. Derig methodology is therefore considered as part of the build. Connections need to be accessible, large elements need to separate safely and installation methods should allow structures to be dismantled without unnecessary damage to the venue or the components themselves.
During derig, our teams dismantle, separate and remove scenic elements in a controlled sequence, protecting existing architecture and working around other contractors leaving the site. Where components can be retained, refurbished or repurposed, they can be returned to the workshop rather than immediately becoming waste. The project is not finished for us when the doors close; it is finished when our work has been safely removed and the space handed back properly.

Evolution Technical can integrate lighting, audio, video and show systems into scenic structures. Evolution Furniture can develop furniture layouts and temporary hospitality environments. Each company remains specialist in its own discipline, with the advantage of being able to work together when the project benefits from it.
