Delivering Multi-Venue Scenic Fabrication

Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2019 was delivered across a group of prominent cultural locations, including Manarat Al Saadiyat, the Cultural Foundation, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Island.

Evolution Scenic was appointed to provide technical expertise and scenic fabrication services across the project.

The scope extended beyond a single stage or backdrop. Evolution Scenic delivered the complete listed scenic package, including bespoke staging, branded installations, scenic backdrops, custom signage, furniture and décor elements.

This created a multi-venue scenic construction project in which several categories of fabricated work had to be coordinated through one technical and visual approach

Translating Concepts Into Buildable Scenic Structures

A scenic concept cannot move directly from presentation artwork into workshop production. Before fabrication begins, the visible design needs to be translated into dimensions, material requirements, structural arrangements and assembly information.

For Culture Summit, Evolution Scenic produced detailed construction drawings and material specifications for the scenic elements. These documents established how the individual stages, backdrops, branded structures, signs and supporting features could be manufactured and installed.

The technical design process also created a common reference for the workshop and site teams. This was especially important because the completed work was distributed across several venues rather than assembled in one controlled location. 

Creating A Connected Scenic Identity

Each Culture Summit location required its own physical arrangement.

The architectural setting, available floor area, circulation routes and operational use of each venue would determine how the scenic elements could be positioned.

At the same time, the environments needed to remain visibly connected to the same project.

Evolution Scenic addressed this through coordinated staging, scenic backdrops, graphic treatments, branded structures, signage, furniture and décor.

The scenic package therefore functioned as a system. Large structures established the primary environments, while smaller branded and functional elements extended the identity through the surrounding spaces.

The result was not one stage reproduced in several buildings. It was a collection of venue-specific scenic installations connected through consistent design and fabrication.

Fabricating The Stage Environments

The project imagery shows a low circular stage environment with a vivid, multicoloured geometric surface treatment.

The patterned scenic floor became a strong visual component of the central presentation setting. Its geometry and colour created a defined focal area without depending on a conventional raised backdrop wall.

Furniture and small presentation tables were arranged around the platform, allowing the stage environment to support different formats while maintaining the same visual identity.

The construction of a circular stage requires control of both geometry and surface finish. Curved perimeter sections need to align accurately, and the visible floor graphic must follow the completed form without irregular joins or distorted patterns.

Scenic Backdrops & Branded Installations

These features helped establish the summit identity within spaces that already had their own strong architectural character.

The scenic work therefore had to remain visually clear without attempting to disguise or permanently alter the host venues. Freestanding branded elements are particularly suited to this type of project because they can define a temporary environment while limiting their interface with the existing building.

The project imagery includes large freestanding Culture Summit lettering positioned outside a glazed venue frontage, accompanied by brightly coloured graphic panels. The installation created a clear branded arrival feature while remaining visually distinct from the permanent architecture.

Custom Signage & Graphic Features

Custom signage formed part of Evolution Scenic’s fabricated scope.

For a multi-location programme, signage performs more than a decorative function. It helps connect separate environments and gives visitors a consistent visual reference as they move between different areas.

Signage and branded features also require careful coordination with scenic backdrops and stage graphics. Variations in colour, scale or surface finish can become particularly noticeable when the same identity appears across several sites.

Evolution Scenic’s technical design process enabled these components to be treated as part of the complete scenic package rather than as unrelated graphics installed after the principal structures.

Furniture & Decor As Part Of The Scenic Package

Furniture and décor were integrated into the Culture Summit environments to support the function and appearance of each space. The user-supplied project clarification confirms that Evolution Scenic fabricated all listed elements, including the furniture and décor package.

Within the central stage imagery, chairs and small tables are positioned directly on and around the circular scenic platform. Their scale and arrangement support the open discussion format while preserving clear views across the stage.

Treating furniture as part of the scenic package allows dimensions, finishes and placement to be coordinated with the surrounding structures. It also helps avoid the visual inconsistency that can occur when a stage is fabricated separately from the functional elements placed within it.

Coordinating Several Cultural Venues

Multi-venue scenic delivery introduces a different type of complexity from a single large installation.

The workshop team must understand which element belongs to each location. The logistics team must ensure that the correct components reach each site in the required order. Installation crews must then work within separate access arrangements and operating procedures.

For Culture Summit, Evolution Scenic navigated HSE protocols, venue-specific restrictions and logistical challenges across the participating locations.

The Cultural Foundation, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Manarat Al Saadiyat are not interchangeable spaces. A scenic structure appropriate for one location may require a different footprint, orientation or installation interface at another.

Detailed drawings and material specifications therefore provided an important control mechanism. They allowed the scenic package to be developed as a coordinated project while retaining the necessary site-specific differences.

Installation Within Existing Architecture

The summit was staged within established cultural environments rather than an empty temporary venue.

This meant the scenic installations had to coexist with permanent architecture, existing finishes and ongoing venue procedures.
