    Developing a Cultural Environment for the UAE Pavilion


    From 30 November to 12 December 2023, the UAE Pavilion at Expo City Dubai presented an immersive cultural experience as part of COP28. The installation connected Emirati heritage, traditional craftsmanship and cultural knowledge with the wider sustainability themes of the international climate conference. Evolution Scenic was appointed by the National Projects Office to develop a client-supplied concept into a complete temporary scenic environment.


    The confirmed scope included design development, scenic fabrication, printed graphics, ambient lighting and on-site installation. Rather than producing conventional enclosed exhibition stands, Evolution Scenic created an open system of timber display frames, shelves, plinths, demonstration tables, interpretive panels and scenic backdrops. Individual settings supported date-palm weaving, traditional gahwa preparation, Emirati medicine displays, marine crafts, guided storytelling and live Ayallah performances. The complete scenic package was developed as a coordinated visual and construction system that integrated with the existing UAE Pavilion architecture.

    Translating the Client Concept into Buildable Scenery


    The client-supplied concept established the cultural content and the intended relationship between heritage, natural materials and sustainability. Evolution Scenic developed this creative direction into scenic structures that could be manufactured efficiently, transported to Expo City Dubai and assembled within the pavilion. Each cultural subject required a different type of physical setting.


    Craft demonstrations needed open working areas and practical surfaces. Interpretive displays required graphic supports, shelves and plinths. Marine heritage objects needed space for larger, irregularly shaped materials. The Ayallah performance environment needed to remain open while still being visually connected to the surrounding installation. The solution was to develop a common modular construction language that could be adapted across the different settings.


    Repeated timber posts, rails, shelves and graphic-panel supports created visual continuity throughout the pavilion. The dimensions and internal arrangements of the modules could then be adjusted according to the objects, demonstrations or interpretation required in each area. This allowed the individual cultural environments to remain distinct without appearing disconnected.

    Creating a Modular Scenic Display System


    The principal scenic system consisted of freestanding timber-framed display structures. These frames provided the architectural foundation for the installation. They supported printed graphics, shelving, archive imagery, craft objects and cultural materials while maintaining open sightlines through the pavilion. The scenic structures were manufactured as workshop-built sections and assembled on site.


    This modular approach allowed the principal components to be fabricated and finished under controlled workshop conditions before delivery. It also reduced the amount of cutting, coating and intensive construction required within the pavilion. Individual modules could be adapted to perform several functions. Some incorporated full-height bilingual interpretation panels. Others included open shelves for baskets, tools or traditional objects. Certain modules acted as scenic backdrops, while additional units framed live demonstration areas.


    The modular system also allowed the structures to remain temporary and reusable. They could be assembled around the pavilion’s existing architecture without becoming permanent interventions within the building. Accurate workshop production was important because repeated frames positioned alongside one another needed to maintain consistent heights, margins, shelf positions and finish quality.

    Timber Fabrication, Scenic Joinery and Finishes


    The confirmed construction materials included solid timber, plywood and MDF. Solid timber formed the principal visible framework. It was used for the posts, rails, open shelving and other exposed structural elements that established the installation’s natural material character. Plywood and MDF were used for shelves, demonstration tables, display plinths, scenic panels and enclosed joinery components.


    These sheet materials allowed the workshop team to produce controlled shapes, consistent surfaces and accurate interfaces between the different scenic elements. The finish palette included laminate, timber stain, clear protective coatings and painted finishes. Stained and clear-coated timber retained the visible grain of the frames and shelves. This created a direct visual connection with the palm leaves, woven baskets, mats, timber objects and other natural cultural materials displayed throughout the installation.


    Painted and laminated finishes were used where individual components required a more uniform appearance or greater visual separation from the exposed timber framework. The scenic finishes remained deliberately restrained. Their purpose was to organise and support the heritage content rather than compete with it. The supplied information does not confirm the timber species, framing dimensions, sheet thicknesses or individual paint and laminate references.

    Fabricating the Traditional Craft Environments


    Evolution Scenic created dedicated scenic settings for live artisan demonstrations and cultural displays, with each area developed around the practical requirements of the craft being presented. The environments provided clear working zones for the artisans while giving visitors an organised view of the associated tools, materials and finished objects. Open structures, accessible display surfaces and simple architectural framing were used instead of enclosed exhibition cases. This approach kept the demonstrations visually connected to the wider pavilion while allowing the cultural content to remain the main focus.


    Date-Palm Weaving

    The date-palm weaving environment used open timber frames, shelving and interpretation panels to support the demonstration of traditional palm-based craft techniques. The scenic structures established the perimeter of the display without enclosing the working area, maintaining clear sightlines between the artisan and visitors. Shelves and open bays provided space for woven baskets, mats and smaller objects, while larger materials could be arranged at floor level. This open arrangement allowed the display to accommodate the varied scale and irregular forms associated with the craft.


    Gahwa Preparation

    A custom demonstration setting was fabricated for traditional Emirati gahwa preparation using a timber working table, supporting shelves and framed interpretive graphics. The scenic joinery provided organised surfaces for coffee pots, cups, baskets and preparation materials while keeping the working area open and accessible. Supporting shelving helped separate displayed objects from the principal preparation surface without visually disconnecting them from the demonstration. The timber construction also maintained continuity with the surrounding craft environments and the wider pavilion design.


    Traditional Medicine

    The traditional medicine area used a combination of freestanding scenic plinths, low display blocks and graphic panels to create an open presentation environment. Objects and natural materials could be positioned at different heights, introducing variation while keeping individual items clearly visible. The simple geometry of the scenic elements allowed the texture, colour and natural character of the displayed materials to remain prominent. Specialist artisans worked with Evolution Scenic across these cultural environments to ensure the fabricated structures responded to the practical requirements of the demonstrations and displayed materials.

    Marine Heritage and Ayallah Performance Settings


    The marine craft display required a different relationship between scenic structure and cultural content. Timber-framed interpretation panels provided vertical surfaces for historical imagery and written information, while open areas at floor level accommodated nets, woven fish traps, model craft and larger maritime objects. The display frames organised the content without forcing irregular heritage materials into conventional cabinets or uniform shelving. This approach allowed the marine objects to retain their natural shapes and scale while still forming part of a controlled scenic composition.


    Evolution Scenic also created a custom-built environment for live Ayallah performances. Unlike the object-based display areas, the performance setting needed to maintain an open central zone. Scenic structures were therefore positioned to define the perimeter and visual identity of the area without obstructing the performers. The same timber construction, printed graphics and restrained finishes connected the Ayallah environment with the wider cultural installation. This demonstrated the flexibility of the modular scenic system. It could support shelving and objects in one area, practical demonstration tables in another and an open performance environment elsewhere.

    Integrating Printed Graphics and Guided Storytelling


    Evolution Scenic produced and installed the printed graphic elements used throughout the cultural route. The interpretation panels were integrated directly into the scenic structures rather than added as separate temporary signs after fabrication. Graphic dimensions, panel openings and fixing positions were coordinated with the timber frames during workshop production. This ensured that the completed panels fitted accurately between the structural rails and maintained consistent margins across the installation. The graphic system combined bilingual written interpretation, archive photography, captions and supporting imagery.


    Some scenic modules carried large-format panels, while others combined graphics with shelves and displayed cultural objects. Freestanding backdrops and interpretation structures also supported guided storytelling tours through the pavilion. Because the graphics and scenic frames were developed together, the installation maintained a consistent relationship between written information, physical objects and architectural structure. The result was a guided cultural environment rather than a series of unrelated signs and display units.

    Ambient Lighting and Scenic Integration


    Evolution Scenic supplied the ambient lighting associated with the scenic installation. The pavilion environment changed considerably between daylight and evening conditions. The display structures, graphics and cultural materials therefore needed to remain visually legible throughout the operating period. The lighting treatment was developed to support the timber frames, shelves, graphic panels and displayed objects without overpowering the cultural content.


    Open-frame construction required careful integration. Fixtures, electrical connections and cable routes needed to remain visually controlled so that the clean timber structures were not interrupted by unnecessary technical clutter. The ambient lighting enhanced the visible grain of the timber and helped define the depth of the shelving, plinths and interpretation panels after dark. It also allowed the individual cultural settings to remain connected as one complete scenic environment during evening operation.

    Sustainable Construction and One-Week Delivery


    Sustainability was incorporated into both the material selection and the construction methodology. The scenic package used reusable structures, recycled materials, responsibly sourced timber and low-VOC finishes. The modular frames, shelves, panels and plinths were designed as temporary scenic components rather than permanent architectural additions. Workshop-built construction supported more controlled material use and reduced the amount of on-site fabrication required within the pavilion.


    The reusable approach also allowed the principal structures to be disassembled after the project rather than being fixed permanently into the existing environment. The confirmed combined fabrication and on-site installation programme was one week. This compressed delivery period required close coordination between workshop manufacturing, finishing, graphic production, lighting integration, transportation and site assembly.


    The frames and joinery needed to arrive on site in a condition that allowed efficient installation. Accurate component sizing and clearly planned connection points reduced the need for extensive adjustment within the pavilion. Once the principal structures were assembled, Evolution Scenic coordinated the placement of graphics, display objects, craft materials and cultural dressing with the specialist artisans.

    Delivering an Integrated Cultural Scenic Installation


    The completed UAE Pavilion environment brought scenic fabrication, traditional craftsmanship, interpretation and lighting together within one coordinated temporary installation. Open timber frames maintained sightlines through the pavilion and allowed the existing architecture to remain part of the visitor experience.


    Custom shelves and plinths organised heritage objects without enclosing them. Demonstration tables created functional working surfaces for live cultural activity. Integrated graphics provided the written and visual interpretation required for guided storytelling. The modular construction language connected date-palm weaving, gahwa preparation, traditional medicine, marine crafts and Ayallah performances while allowing each area to retain its individual purpose.


    The project also demonstrated how temporary scenic fabrication can support authentic cultural activity rather than functioning only as decorative theming. Evolution Scenic provided the manufactured scenic framework, custom joinery, graphics, lighting and installation. Specialist artisans contributed the cultural knowledge, traditional practices and objects associated with the individual demonstrations.


    Reusable structures, recycled materials, responsibly sourced timber and low-VOC finishes reinforced the sustainability objectives of the pavilion. Delivered within a combined one-week fabrication and installation programme, the project demonstrated the importance of modular scenic engineering, controlled workshop production and coordinated site assembly. The finished environment provided the UAE Pavilion with a coherent physical setting in which Emirati heritage could be demonstrated, interpreted and experienced through materials, craftsmanship, objects and live performance.

    CREATING A COMPLETE VISIT SAUDI HOSPITALITY ENVIRONMENT


    For the 2024 Rugby 7s event in Dubai, Evolution Scenic delivered a complete temporary hospitality environment for Visit Saudi. The project extended well beyond fitting out a single tent. It combined a 15-metre by 10-metre external entrance and seating area, a 15-metre by 15-metre main hospitality space and a separate five-metre by five-metre back-of-house catering tent.


    Each zone had a different purpose. The outdoor area needed to establish the arrival experience and provide shaded seating. The main tent had to accommodate hospitality, catering, reception, displays, furniture and technical equipment. The rear tent needed to support food preparation and service without interrupting the principal space.


    Evolution Scenic handled the design, technical development, fabrication, installation and de-rig. This allowed the scenic walls, ceiling treatment, custom joinery, furniture, graphics, lighting and operational requirements to be considered as one connected environment rather than a tent filled with unrelated rental elements.


    That distinction is important in hospitality fabrication. Temporary spaces still need the organisation, finish and practical planning expected of a permanent interior, but they have to be manufactured, installed and removed within a much shorter period. The structure may only exist for a few days, yet it still needs to work properly from the moment it is handed over.

    PLANNING THREE CONNECTED OPERATIONAL ZONES


    The three spaces were linked visually and operationally, but they could not all be treated in the same way. The external area was open and exposed, the main tent was a controlled interior, and the catering tent functioned primarily as a working support space.


    The outdoor zone contained ten six-seater high tables with Arrow barstools, creating the principal standing and seated hospitality arrangement before guests entered the main tent. Four cantilever umbrellas provided shade, while six branded flagpoles and six planted elements helped define the perimeter and strengthen the arrival composition.


    Inside the main tent, twelve natural-finished solid-wood round tables created four-seat settings, supported by sofa seating and selected carpeted areas. Four buffet counters, a reception counter and a display plinth organised the principal service and presentation functions. Television screens, four wall-mounted timber shelves, four freestanding air-conditioning units and six fire extinguishers also had to be accommodated within the design.


    The back-of-house tent sat behind the principal space and provided the operational catering area. Although less visible, its position affected the main layout. Buffet counters and service routes needed to relate sensibly to the catering support behind them, allowing staff to move between the two areas without disrupting the guest-facing environment.


    One of the questions we often ask during hospitality planning is where the operational pressure will occur once the space is in use. A plan may appear balanced when viewed empty, but catering queues, staff movement, furniture and service equipment can change how it performs. Counters, seating and circulation therefore need to be considered in relation to actual use rather than simply arranged to fill the available floor area.


    The three-zone layout allowed the project to separate arrival, hospitality and catering while maintaining a clear visual connection between them. The outdoor area introduced the Visit Saudi identity, the main tent developed it into a complete interior and the rear tent supported the practical activity required to keep the hospitality operation running.

    BUILDING AN INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE INSIDE THE TENT


    The main tent provided the weather enclosure, but the scenic construction established the interior architecture. MDF-clad walls, textured paint, graphics, timber details and a custom ceiling treatment transformed the temporary shell into a defined hospitality environment.


    The internal wall system created a controlled backdrop around the space. MDF provided a stable surface for textured paint and selected vinyl graphics, while shaped panels and fitted details allowed the walls to accommodate branding, screens, shelving and operational equipment.


    A temporary tent rarely offers the same straight and consistent surfaces as a permanent building. The scenic walling therefore needed to create its own finished geometry rather than relying on the fabric enclosure behind it. This gave the interior a more architectural quality and provided reliable fixing positions for the elements mounted onto it.


    At selected locations, wall-mounted acrylic branding panels were installed against barasti backdrops. The contrast between the clean acrylic surfaces and the irregular natural texture gave the branding greater depth than a flat graphic applied directly to the wall.


    This layering also allowed the Visit Saudi identity to appear as part of the material composition. The acrylic carried the precise graphic form, while the barasti created a warmer and more tactile background. Neither material had to imitate the other.


    Television screens and timber floating shelves were incorporated into the wall arrangement. Their positions needed to be resolved during technical development because the internal support, cable routes and access requirements all affected the construction behind the finished surface.


    It is easy to treat a screen as a rectangular object that can be mounted once the wall is complete. In practice, its position influences framing, power access, viewing height and the alignment of the surrounding graphics and joinery. The timber shelves created similar demands. They needed sufficient concealed support while maintaining the appearance of clean floating elements.


    Overhead, an aluminium frame carried a barasti-pole timber ceiling finish. This ceiling treatment gave the tent a strong internal identity and created a direct relationship with the natural timber furniture and barasti wall details.


    The visible ceiling also changed the perceived proportions of the space. Rather than looking upward into the standard tent roof, guests saw a designed overhead surface with its own rhythm, texture and lighting. That helped the main tent feel more like a temporary hospitality venue and less like a fitted marquee.


    An overhead scenic treatment introduces practical considerations that do not apply to wall finishes. The aluminium frame had to support the barasti poles while maintaining clear relationships with lighting, air movement and the usable height of the interior. The finish also needed to remain consistent across a broad ceiling area, where irregular spacing would have been easy to see.

    INTEGRATING JOINERY, LIGHTING AND OPERATIONAL SYSTEMS


    The main tent required a collection of custom-fabricated joinery with different operational roles. Four buffet counters created the principal catering interface, a separate reception counter established the arrival and information point, and a display plinth provided a dedicated location for branded presentation.


    These elements needed to function properly before their scenic finish was considered. Buffet counters require usable working heights, adequate depth and practical service access. Reception counters need to support staff and equipment without appearing overbuilt. Display plinths may be visually simple, but clean geometry makes surface accuracy and edge quality particularly noticeable.


    The joinery was developed in relation to the surrounding walls, flooring, graphics and furniture. Counter dimensions and positions affected circulation, while their surfaces and finishes needed to sit comfortably alongside the textured paint, acrylic branding and natural timber elements.


    Four wooden floating shelves were mounted directly to the scenic walls. These introduced additional display capacity without adding more freestanding units to the room, helping the interior remain open and organised.


    Custom scenic lighting features were incorporated into the walls and ceiling. Rather than treating light as an independent technical layer applied after fabrication, the fixtures were coordinated with the scenic surfaces and overhead framework.


    This allowed the lighting to reveal the material character of the interior. Textured walls, barasti poles, acrylic panels and timber joinery respond differently to light, and those differences added depth to the space.


    Integrated lighting also helped distinguish focal areas from circulation and service zones. The counters, branding and principal wall features could be visually emphasised without relying on one general level of illumination across the complete tent.


    Operational equipment presented a different challenge. The space required four freestanding air-conditioning units and six fire extinguishers, all of which needed to remain available and correctly positioned while sitting within a carefully designed interior.


    Evolution Scenic fabricated scenic covers to reduce the visual impact of this equipment and help it relate to the surrounding walling and joinery. This is a common requirement in hospitality environments, where essential systems can otherwise become the most visually prominent objects in the room.


    Concealment must never prevent equipment from functioning. Air-conditioning units still require airflow and access, while fire extinguishers must remain visible and reachable. The detailed ventilation and maintenance provisions for the covers have not been recorded, but the principle remains important: operational systems can be visually integrated, but they cannot be treated as decoration.


    This balance between appearance and function runs through the entire project. Screens needed cables. Counters needed service access. Air-conditioning required clear operation. Fire-safety equipment needed accessibility. Scenic fabrication provided the visual control, but the technical and operational requirements continued to shape the finished environment.

    EXTENDING THE MATERIAL AND BRAND LANGUAGE OUTDOORS


    The external 15-metre by 10-metre hospitality area extended the Visit Saudi environment beyond the main tent. AstroTurf created a consistent finished surface across the zone, replacing the visual character of the event ground with a more deliberate hospitality setting.


    Ten high tables, each arranged with six Arrow barstools, provided the principal seating and standing layout. Four cantilever umbrellas introduced shade while allowing the tables to remain flexible and open around their bases.


    The outdoor arrangement needed to work as both an entrance and a usable hospitality space. Guests could gather before entering the main tent, but the furniture, flags and planting also needed to guide movement rather than block the approach.


    Six branded flagpoles created height and visibility across the area. Because the seating and AstroTurf remained comparatively low, the flags helped identify the space from a distance and established the Visit Saudi presence before the internal architecture became visible.


    Six planted elements softened the edges of the area and provided a transition between the event surroundings, the furniture and the tent entrance. Planting can be particularly useful in temporary environments because it introduces irregular natural form against repeated furniture and fabricated structures.


    The use of timber, barasti and planting created a material connection between the exterior and interior. The outside area did not repeat the scenic wall system or ceiling construction, but it still felt related through natural textures, branded elements and a controlled floor treatment.


    Branding was carried through the complete project using several methods. The external entrance and flagpoles established the identity outdoors. Inside, vinyl graphics, printed banners and acrylic panels extended it across the walls, counters and display features.


    Using more than one branding technique prevented the environment from feeling overly repetitive. Printed graphics were appropriate for larger surfaces and information, while acrylic panels provided a more dimensional treatment at focal positions. Barasti backdrops gave those acrylic elements a distinctive material setting, and the custom joinery allowed branding to be incorporated into physical objects rather than applied only to walls.


    In practice, a hospitality space feels more resolved when branding follows the hierarchy of the architecture. The entrance needs clear recognition, focal walls can carry stronger identity treatments and smaller joinery elements can use more restrained details. Repeating the same logo at the same scale throughout the space would not have produced the same result.

    INSTALLATION, HANDOVER AND DE-RIG


    Evolution Scenic delivered the complete on-site build-up of the environment. The wall systems, aluminium ceiling frame, barasti finish, flooring, counters, shelves, acrylic panels, television screens, scenic lighting, equipment covers, furniture and external elements all needed to be assembled in their final positions.


    The three zones required different installation sequences. The main tent fit-out depended on establishing walls, overhead construction and floor finishes before much of the fitted joinery and furniture could be completed. The outdoor area required AstroTurf, furniture, umbrellas, planting and flagpoles, while the rear catering tent needed to be prepared around the operational requirements of the service team.


    The overhead frame and wall systems would naturally influence much of the main installation programme. Once those elements were in place, graphics, lighting and fitted details could be completed without major structural work continuing around finished surfaces.


    Flooring also needed to be coordinated with the scenic footprints. Carpet had to finish cleanly around walls, counters and furniture positions, while AstroTurf needed controlled edges across the external area.


    A complete hospitality environment is not ready for handover simply because the scenic fabrication is finished. Television screens, lighting and cooling equipment need to be checked, furniture must be positioned, and catering and reception teams require access to prepare their areas.


    This is one reason early coordination with the operational teams matters. The scenic installation defines the physical space, but the people using it need sufficient time to stock counters, test equipment and understand how the environment works before guests arrive.


    Following the event, Evolution Scenic completed the full de-rig. The walling, ceiling treatment, counters, shelves, graphics, lighting features, furniture and outdoor elements were removed after the installation had served its operational period.


    De-rig is not simply installation in reverse. Some connections become less accessible once finishes and operational equipment have been added, and the sequence must prevent partially dismantled overhead or wall structures from becoming unstable.


    The temporary nature of the project therefore affected the construction from the beginning. Elements needed to be strong enough for use, refined enough for a hospitality environment and practical enough to remove once the event had finished.

    WHEN A TENT BECOMES A COMPLETE HOSPITALITY ENVIRONMENT


    The completed Visit Saudi installation brought together temporary architecture, scenic fabrication and operational fit-out within one coordinated project.


    The barasti ceiling, textured walls, acrylic branding, natural timber furniture and custom lighting established the interior character. Buffet counters, reception joinery, screens, cooling equipment and fire-safety positions were integrated into the same environment rather than treated as unavoidable additions.


    Outside, AstroTurf, umbrellas, high tables, flags and planting extended the project beyond the main tent and created a clear arrival space. Behind the hospitality environment, the separate catering tent provided the practical support required to keep the principal areas operating.


    Evolution Scenic’s role covered design, technical development, fabrication, installation and de-rig, allowing the architectural, scenic and operational decisions to remain connected throughout the project.


    The result demonstrates an important point about temporary hospitality construction. A tent provides shelter, but it does not create an environment on its own. The quality of the finished space comes from the way walls, ceilings, materials, furniture, branding, lighting and practical systems are developed together.


    When those elements are coordinated properly, the temporary structure stops feeling like an enclosure filled for an event. It begins to operate as a purpose-built hospitality space.

    Engineering A Telescopic Skyline For The UAE Golden Jubilee


    The UAE’s Golden Jubilee production at Hatta Dam combined large-scale performance design with one of the country’s most dramatic natural settings. Designed by Es Devlin and produced by LarMac Live, the performance took place on a floating stage constructed within an artificial pool. The surrounding mountains formed part of the visual composition, framing the stage and amplifying the scale of the production.


    Evolution Scenic was responsible for delivering one of its most ambitious scenic features: 100 illuminated telescopic replicas of iconic UAE buildings. Concealed within the central stage feature for most of the performance, the structures rose together in synchronisation during the climax, creating a luminous architectural skyline representing 50 years of national achievement and progress.


    The reveal transformed the performance into a symbolic visual journey, as the skyline emerged from the stage to echo the nation’s rapid development. The coordinated lift system and integrated lighting design ensured a seamless transition from concealment to full illumination, reinforcing the narrative of growth and unity at the heart of the celebration.

    Turning Architecture Into Moving Scenery


    The scenic concept required recognisable building forms to function as compact, moving structures. Each replica had to preserve enough of the original building’s architectural identity to remain legible to the audience, while also operating as part of a telescopic mechanical system. As a result, the structures could not be designed as conventional static props; their external surfaces, internal frames, lighting systems, and moving tiers all needed to be developed as a single, integrated assembly.


    Some of the buildings extended beyond six metres when fully raised, yet had to retract into concealed spaces as small as 1.2 metres by 20 centimetres. This extreme shift in scale demanded a carefully engineered approach in which form and mechanism were inseparable. The scenic elements were designed not only to represent architecture, but also to physically perform its transformation in real time.


    To achieve this, a multi-tiered construction system was developed, with individual structures incorporating up to four telescopic sections. These layers divided the visible height into nested components that could collapse smoothly into one another beneath the stage. The result was a set of architectural forms capable of expanding and contracting seamlessly, maintaining visual clarity while enabling complex stage movement.

    Controlling Movement Across One Hundred Structures


    The buildings were driven by telescopic tower machines and guided by heavy-duty industrial tracks. These track systems controlled the vertical travel of the moving scenic tiers as each structure extended and retracted. Their purpose was to reduce unwanted movement and maintain consistent alignment throughout the sequence.


    Accuracy was essential because every building formed part of a much larger architectural composition. Any structure that stopped at the wrong height, moved unevenly or twisted during travel would disrupt the visual rhythm of the skyline. The mechanical and scenic components therefore had to work together as a single controlled system.


    The completed system needed to deliver repeatable movement across 100 separately fabricated units. Although each building had its own architectural proportions and tier arrangement, every structure had to reach its final position within the same programmed sequence. This required the movement of the individual units to remain coordinated with the collective transformation of the skyline.

    Fabricating Illuminated Scenic Lightboxes


    The architectural replicas were constructed as self-illuminated scenic lightboxes. Internal LED lighting gave each building a strong visual presence and reinforced its three-dimensional form. This was particularly important at Hatta Dam, where the structures needed to remain visually clear against the surrounding mountains, stage lighting and open night sky.


    The illuminated surfaces allowed the buildings to read as architectural volumes rather than flat cut-outs. Each structure contained individually controlled LEDs, enabling its lighting to be managed as part of the wider scenic composition. All 100 buildings were patched into a single control circuit so the lighting team could create coordinated sequences across the entire skyline.


    The lighting integration also had to remain compatible with the telescopic movement of the structures. Electrical connections and cable routes needed to accommodate the extension and retraction of the individual tiers. Every component had to move without obstructing the mechanical system or compromising the illuminated effect.

    Working Within A Challenging Outdoor Environment


    Hatta Dam provided an exceptional visual backdrop, but the location also introduced significant technical challenges. High winds and humidity were confirmed considerations for the moving scenic system. The tall, lightweight replicas needed to rise smoothly and remain visually stable once fully extended.


    The telescopic mechanisms and heavy-duty industrial tracks also needed to operate reliably within the outdoor environment. This required the moving components to maintain their alignment throughout repeated extension and retraction. Their operation was fundamental to the timing and visual consistency of the complete skyline.


    The floating stage and artificial pool added another layer of coordination to the installation. Each scenic structure had to integrate into a central stage feature with highly restricted concealed spaces and limited tolerance for dimensional variation. Successful operation therefore depended on the relationship between workshop accuracy, mechanical alignment, control integration and on-site testing.

    Delivering The Performance Climax


    During the climax of the Golden Jubilee performance, 100 illuminated structures rose together from the stage floor. The sequence transformed the central performance space into a three-dimensional architectural landscape.


    The buildings represented the UAE’s growth over the previous 50 years. Through the coordinated use of movement, light and form, national development was translated into a physical scenic moment.


    The final effect appeared visually simple: a complete skyline emerging seamlessly from the stage. Behind the reveal was a complex system of telescopic tiers, industrial tracks, lighting controls and individually fabricated scenic structures operating together within a compact concealed space.

    Evolution Scenic’s role required scenic construction and technical engineering to be coordinated at a scale where every component contributed to the reliability of the complete installation. The finished telescopic skyline became the production’s defining visual climax and demonstrated Evolution Scenic’s capability in moving scenery, compact engineering and large-scale custom fabrication.
