    Developing a Cultural Environment for the UAE Pavilion


    From 30 November to 12 December 2023, the UAE Pavilion at Expo City Dubai presented an immersive cultural experience as part of COP28. The installation connected Emirati heritage, traditional craftsmanship and cultural knowledge with the wider sustainability themes of the international climate conference. Evolution Scenic was appointed by the National Projects Office to develop a client-supplied concept into a complete temporary scenic environment.


    The confirmed scope included design development, scenic fabrication, printed graphics, ambient lighting and on-site installation. Rather than producing conventional enclosed exhibition stands, Evolution Scenic created an open system of timber display frames, shelves, plinths, demonstration tables, interpretive panels and scenic backdrops. Individual settings supported date-palm weaving, traditional gahwa preparation, Emirati medicine displays, marine crafts, guided storytelling and live Ayallah performances. The complete scenic package was developed as a coordinated visual and construction system that integrated with the existing UAE Pavilion architecture.

    Translating the Client Concept into Buildable Scenery


    The client-supplied concept established the cultural content and the intended relationship between heritage, natural materials and sustainability. Evolution Scenic developed this creative direction into scenic structures that could be manufactured efficiently, transported to Expo City Dubai and assembled within the pavilion. Each cultural subject required a different type of physical setting.


    Craft demonstrations needed open working areas and practical surfaces. Interpretive displays required graphic supports, shelves and plinths. Marine heritage objects needed space for larger, irregularly shaped materials. The Ayallah performance environment needed to remain open while still being visually connected to the surrounding installation. The solution was to develop a common modular construction language that could be adapted across the different settings.


    Repeated timber posts, rails, shelves and graphic-panel supports created visual continuity throughout the pavilion. The dimensions and internal arrangements of the modules could then be adjusted according to the objects, demonstrations or interpretation required in each area. This allowed the individual cultural environments to remain distinct without appearing disconnected.

    Creating a Modular Scenic Display System


    The principal scenic system consisted of freestanding timber-framed display structures. These frames provided the architectural foundation for the installation. They supported printed graphics, shelving, archive imagery, craft objects and cultural materials while maintaining open sightlines through the pavilion. The scenic structures were manufactured as workshop-built sections and assembled on site.


    This modular approach allowed the principal components to be fabricated and finished under controlled workshop conditions before delivery. It also reduced the amount of cutting, coating and intensive construction required within the pavilion. Individual modules could be adapted to perform several functions. Some incorporated full-height bilingual interpretation panels. Others included open shelves for baskets, tools or traditional objects. Certain modules acted as scenic backdrops, while additional units framed live demonstration areas.


    The modular system also allowed the structures to remain temporary and reusable. They could be assembled around the pavilion’s existing architecture without becoming permanent interventions within the building. Accurate workshop production was important because repeated frames positioned alongside one another needed to maintain consistent heights, margins, shelf positions and finish quality.

    Timber Fabrication, Scenic Joinery and Finishes


    The confirmed construction materials included solid timber, plywood and MDF. Solid timber formed the principal visible framework. It was used for the posts, rails, open shelving and other exposed structural elements that established the installation’s natural material character. Plywood and MDF were used for shelves, demonstration tables, display plinths, scenic panels and enclosed joinery components.


    These sheet materials allowed the workshop team to produce controlled shapes, consistent surfaces and accurate interfaces between the different scenic elements. The finish palette included laminate, timber stain, clear protective coatings and painted finishes. Stained and clear-coated timber retained the visible grain of the frames and shelves. This created a direct visual connection with the palm leaves, woven baskets, mats, timber objects and other natural cultural materials displayed throughout the installation.


    Painted and laminated finishes were used where individual components required a more uniform appearance or greater visual separation from the exposed timber framework. The scenic finishes remained deliberately restrained. Their purpose was to organise and support the heritage content rather than compete with it. The supplied information does not confirm the timber species, framing dimensions, sheet thicknesses or individual paint and laminate references.

    Fabricating the Traditional Craft Environments


    Evolution Scenic created dedicated scenic settings for live artisan demonstrations and cultural displays, with each area developed around the practical requirements of the craft being presented. The environments provided clear working zones for the artisans while giving visitors an organised view of the associated tools, materials and finished objects. Open structures, accessible display surfaces and simple architectural framing were used instead of enclosed exhibition cases. This approach kept the demonstrations visually connected to the wider pavilion while allowing the cultural content to remain the main focus.


    Date-Palm Weaving

    The date-palm weaving environment used open timber frames, shelving and interpretation panels to support the demonstration of traditional palm-based craft techniques. The scenic structures established the perimeter of the display without enclosing the working area, maintaining clear sightlines between the artisan and visitors. Shelves and open bays provided space for woven baskets, mats and smaller objects, while larger materials could be arranged at floor level. This open arrangement allowed the display to accommodate the varied scale and irregular forms associated with the craft.


    Gahwa Preparation

    A custom demonstration setting was fabricated for traditional Emirati gahwa preparation using a timber working table, supporting shelves and framed interpretive graphics. The scenic joinery provided organised surfaces for coffee pots, cups, baskets and preparation materials while keeping the working area open and accessible. Supporting shelving helped separate displayed objects from the principal preparation surface without visually disconnecting them from the demonstration. The timber construction also maintained continuity with the surrounding craft environments and the wider pavilion design.


    Traditional Medicine

    The traditional medicine area used a combination of freestanding scenic plinths, low display blocks and graphic panels to create an open presentation environment. Objects and natural materials could be positioned at different heights, introducing variation while keeping individual items clearly visible. The simple geometry of the scenic elements allowed the texture, colour and natural character of the displayed materials to remain prominent. Specialist artisans worked with Evolution Scenic across these cultural environments to ensure the fabricated structures responded to the practical requirements of the demonstrations and displayed materials.

    Marine Heritage and Ayallah Performance Settings


    The marine craft display required a different relationship between scenic structure and cultural content. Timber-framed interpretation panels provided vertical surfaces for historical imagery and written information, while open areas at floor level accommodated nets, woven fish traps, model craft and larger maritime objects. The display frames organised the content without forcing irregular heritage materials into conventional cabinets or uniform shelving. This approach allowed the marine objects to retain their natural shapes and scale while still forming part of a controlled scenic composition.


    Evolution Scenic also created a custom-built environment for live Ayallah performances. Unlike the object-based display areas, the performance setting needed to maintain an open central zone. Scenic structures were therefore positioned to define the perimeter and visual identity of the area without obstructing the performers. The same timber construction, printed graphics and restrained finishes connected the Ayallah environment with the wider cultural installation. This demonstrated the flexibility of the modular scenic system. It could support shelving and objects in one area, practical demonstration tables in another and an open performance environment elsewhere.

    Integrating Printed Graphics and Guided Storytelling


    Evolution Scenic produced and installed the printed graphic elements used throughout the cultural route. The interpretation panels were integrated directly into the scenic structures rather than added as separate temporary signs after fabrication. Graphic dimensions, panel openings and fixing positions were coordinated with the timber frames during workshop production. This ensured that the completed panels fitted accurately between the structural rails and maintained consistent margins across the installation. The graphic system combined bilingual written interpretation, archive photography, captions and supporting imagery.


    Some scenic modules carried large-format panels, while others combined graphics with shelves and displayed cultural objects. Freestanding backdrops and interpretation structures also supported guided storytelling tours through the pavilion. Because the graphics and scenic frames were developed together, the installation maintained a consistent relationship between written information, physical objects and architectural structure. The result was a guided cultural environment rather than a series of unrelated signs and display units.

    Ambient Lighting and Scenic Integration


    Evolution Scenic supplied the ambient lighting associated with the scenic installation. The pavilion environment changed considerably between daylight and evening conditions. The display structures, graphics and cultural materials therefore needed to remain visually legible throughout the operating period. The lighting treatment was developed to support the timber frames, shelves, graphic panels and displayed objects without overpowering the cultural content.


    Open-frame construction required careful integration. Fixtures, electrical connections and cable routes needed to remain visually controlled so that the clean timber structures were not interrupted by unnecessary technical clutter. The ambient lighting enhanced the visible grain of the timber and helped define the depth of the shelving, plinths and interpretation panels after dark. It also allowed the individual cultural settings to remain connected as one complete scenic environment during evening operation.

    Sustainable Construction and One-Week Delivery


    Sustainability was incorporated into both the material selection and the construction methodology. The scenic package used reusable structures, recycled materials, responsibly sourced timber and low-VOC finishes. The modular frames, shelves, panels and plinths were designed as temporary scenic components rather than permanent architectural additions. Workshop-built construction supported more controlled material use and reduced the amount of on-site fabrication required within the pavilion.


    The reusable approach also allowed the principal structures to be disassembled after the project rather than being fixed permanently into the existing environment. The confirmed combined fabrication and on-site installation programme was one week. This compressed delivery period required close coordination between workshop manufacturing, finishing, graphic production, lighting integration, transportation and site assembly.


    The frames and joinery needed to arrive on site in a condition that allowed efficient installation. Accurate component sizing and clearly planned connection points reduced the need for extensive adjustment within the pavilion. Once the principal structures were assembled, Evolution Scenic coordinated the placement of graphics, display objects, craft materials and cultural dressing with the specialist artisans.

    Delivering an Integrated Cultural Scenic Installation


    The completed UAE Pavilion environment brought scenic fabrication, traditional craftsmanship, interpretation and lighting together within one coordinated temporary installation. Open timber frames maintained sightlines through the pavilion and allowed the existing architecture to remain part of the visitor experience.


    Custom shelves and plinths organised heritage objects without enclosing them. Demonstration tables created functional working surfaces for live cultural activity. Integrated graphics provided the written and visual interpretation required for guided storytelling. The modular construction language connected date-palm weaving, gahwa preparation, traditional medicine, marine crafts and Ayallah performances while allowing each area to retain its individual purpose.


    The project also demonstrated how temporary scenic fabrication can support authentic cultural activity rather than functioning only as decorative theming. Evolution Scenic provided the manufactured scenic framework, custom joinery, graphics, lighting and installation. Specialist artisans contributed the cultural knowledge, traditional practices and objects associated with the individual demonstrations.


    Reusable structures, recycled materials, responsibly sourced timber and low-VOC finishes reinforced the sustainability objectives of the pavilion. Delivered within a combined one-week fabrication and installation programme, the project demonstrated the importance of modular scenic engineering, controlled workshop production and coordinated site assembly. The finished environment provided the UAE Pavilion with a coherent physical setting in which Emirati heritage could be demonstrated, interpreted and experienced through materials, craftsmanship, objects and live performance.

    Every fabrication company has encountered the same situation. A client requests several quotations for a scenic structure, exhibition environment or temporary installation. One proposal arrives at a noticeably lower price than the others, making it appear to be the obvious commercial choice.


    The difference may look like a saving during procurement. Once technical development, manufacturing and installation begin, however, unresolved items can quickly turn that saving into additional expenditure. The issue is rarely the quoted price alone. The real challenge is that fabrication quotations do not always compare like for like.

    The Same Design Can Represent Very Different Scopes


    A concept render communicates the intended appearance of a project, but it does not always explain how the structure will be engineered, manufactured, transported or installed. Two fabricators may therefore price the same visual concept using very different assumptions.


    One quotation might include:


    • Technical design development
    • Structural engineering reviews
    • Detailed fabrication drawings
    • Material samples and finish approvals
    • CNC programming and production
    • Trial assembly
    • Protective packaging
    • Transport planning
    • Site supervision
    • Installation labour
    • Access equipment

    Another quotation may cover only the physical manufacture of the visible elements. Neither approach is automatically incorrect. The difficulty begins when the exclusions, assumptions and responsibilities are not clearly understood. A lower headline figure may simply mean that important parts of the project remain unpriced.


    A meaningful quotation comparison should therefore examine scope before cost. The key question is not only, “How much is the structure?” It is also, “What work is required to deliver it successfully, and who is responsible for each stage?”

    Engineering reviews, technical drawings and buildability studies are often less visible than finished scenic surfaces, yet they can influence almost every part of a fabrication project.

    • Where steel or aluminium reinforcement is required
    • How separate components will connect
    • Whether the installation can be safely lifted
    • How the structure will be restrained on site
    • Whether floor, rigging or venue loading limits apply

    This work takes time, but it also resolves problems while they are still relatively inexpensive to correct. When engineering development is excluded or reduced, technical decisions may be postponed until the workshop or installation stage.     Material selection is another area where quotations can differ significantly. Two structures may appear identical in a render but perform very differently depending on how they are built. A wall could be manufactured using timber framing, lightweight steel, aluminium extrusion, composite panels, MDF, plywood or a hybrid construction method. Each option affects weight, durability, finish quality, fire performance, handling and installation.


    Material substitution is not necessarily a negative practice. It can form part of responsible value engineering when the alternative has been properly assessed. The problem arises when a cheaper material changes the performance of the structure without that difference being clearly communicated.


    A lower-cost board, for example, may require additional support, more careful handling or greater finishing time. A heavier structural system may increase vehicle requirements, lifting arrangements and installation labour. A finish that performs well in a controlled exhibition hall may be unsuitable for an outdoor public installation exposed to heat, moisture, dust or repeated handling. The cost of a material should therefore be considered alongside its effect on the complete build methodology.

    When installation planning has been considered from the beginning, scenic components can be designed around practical site conditions.     Without that preparation, the site team may need to improvise. Additional labour, overnight working, access equipment, cutting, welding, repainting and last-minute hardware can quickly increase the final cost. Delays may also affect other contractors whose work depends on the scenic installation being completed. Installation support is therefore not simply an optional service added after fabrication. It is part of the overall construction methodology.

    A cheaper manufacturing method can become expensive when it produces oversized, heavy or difficult-to-protect components. The relevant comparison is therefore not only the workshop price, but the total cost of delivering the fabricated work to its final position.

    Rework is one of the most common ways an apparently economical quotation becomes expensive.

    • Reducing unnecessary material thickness
    • Selecting lighter structural systems
    • Using CNC machining to improve production efficiency
    • Dividing components to optimise transport
    • Designing reusable modular assemblies
    • Concentrating premium finishes where they have the greatest visual impact
    • Adjusting connection details to reduce installation time


    These decisions preserve the design intent while improving how the project is manufactured and installed. Cost cutting takes a different approach. It removes expenditure without always considering the wider consequences. The immediate quotation becomes lower, but the saving may transfer risk into durability, coordination, transportation or site installation.


    Good value engineering looks at the complete project. It considers the relationship between material cost, labour, logistics, programme, performance and finish quality.

    How to Compare Fabrication Quotations Properly


    A useful quotation review should examine more than the final total.


    Before selecting a supplier, clients and project teams should confirm:


    1. Scope: What is included, excluded and assumed?
    2. Engineering: Are structural reviews and technical drawings included?
    3. Materials: Are the proposed materials clearly specified?
    4. Finishes: Are samples, testing and approval processes covered?
    5. Transport: Is packaging, loading and delivery included?
    6. Installation: Who provides labour, supervision, tools and access equipment?
    7. Site conditions: Have access restrictions, working hours and venue rules been considered?
    8. Coordination: Who manages interfaces with lighting, graphics, audiovisual systems and other contractors?
    9. Revisions: How are design changes and additional work handled?
    10. Handover: Are snagging, final adjustments and completion support included?


    This does not mean the most expensive quotation is automatically the best. A high price can also contain inefficiencies or unnecessary allowances. The aim is to compare the same responsibilities, performance standards and delivery requirements. Only then does the price comparison become meaningful.

    Designing a Circular Scenic Environment for ADSW Youth Circle


    The ADSW Youth Circle was held in Abu Dhabi during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2018. Hosted at the ADSW VIP Majlis in ICC Hall in collaboration with ADSW and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the project required an environment suitable for an open discussion format while maintaining a clear and recognisable visual identity.


    Evolution Scenic was responsible for the design and fabrication of the scenic environment. The delivered package centred on a custom circular stage, supported by freestanding branding, scenic backdrop elements, event furniture and AV coordination. Together, these components created a complete event setting rather than a conventional stage placed in front of a separate audience area.

    Translating the Youth Circles Identity into Scenic Form


    The Youth Circles identity was based on a strong circular graphic device. Evolution Scenic carried this geometry through the physical environment. The principal stage featured a large orange branded centre surrounded by a clean white scenic perimeter. This created a clearly defined central area while retaining the low visual profile required by the surrounding arrangement.


    A freestanding circular Youth Circles logo feature was positioned beside the platform. Mounted on a shaped white scenic support, it transformed the event identity from a flat graphic into a physical branded object. The project imagery also shows a secondary white branding wall within the venue. Its restrained finish provided a neutral scenic surface for event identities and supporting information without competing with the stronger orange stage treatment.


    The repetition of circular geometry across the floor treatment, stage perimeter and upright logo feature gave the environment consistency. Each component could be read separately, but together they formed a single scenic language.

    Designing for a Radial Layout


    The Youth Circle did not use a conventional frontal stage arrangement. The photographs show seating distributed around the central platform, making the stage an object within the room rather than an elevated surface viewed from only one direction.


    This configuration placed greater emphasis on all-round presentation. Scenic edges, joints, graphic alignment and rear surfaces could potentially remain visible from different positions. The low-profile construction helped preserve visual relationships across the environment. The central stage remained distinct without creating a substantial physical barrier through the space.


    The upright Youth Circles logo feature provided a stronger vertical marker. Its height and position gave the installation a recognisable branded focal point while the central platform remained comparatively low. Exact sightline studies and stage dimensions have not been supplied. The discussion above is based on the visible arrangement rather than project-specific technical drawings.

    Developing the Scenic Components


    The confirmed scope included scenic design and fabrication. Developing a circular stage package requires careful control of geometry. The perimeter must read as a consistent curve, while floor graphics and applied branding must align with the physical centre of the platform.


    The freestanding circular logo feature introduced a separate fabrication requirement. Its visible disc, supporting scenic body and floor interface needed to form a stable, cleanly finished object suitable for an indoor temporary environment.


    The supporting branding wall required a different scenic treatment. Its larger rectangular surface created a counterpoint to the circular centrepiece and provided a practical location for supporting visual information. Although the materials are not recorded, the visible scenic treatment relied on clean white surfaces and precisely positioned orange graphics. The quality of the completed environment therefore depended on accurate fabrication as well as controlled graphic production and application. No substrate, framing, jointing, fixing or paint specifications have been inferred.

    Coordinating Scenic Branding and AV Requirements


    The published project scope confirms that scenic backdrops were integrated with AV elements to support presentations and video coverage. This interface is significant because scenic and technical systems cannot be developed independently when they occupy the same visual environment.Screen positions, camera views, equipment footprints, cable routes and access for technical adjustments can all influence scenic dimensions and component placement.


    For an environment intended to be viewed from several directions, technical equipment also needs to be incorporated without weakening the overall composition.The available information does not confirm which AV components were physically integrated into the scenic construction or which were positioned independently by the technical team. The case study therefore records the confirmed coordination requirement without assigning unverified construction details.

    Combining Stage, Branding and Furniture


    The event furniture formed part of the overall Evolution delivery. White chairs were arranged around the circular platform, reinforcing the all-round format while maintaining the visual simplicity of the scenic environment.


    The furniture was not treated as scenery, but its placement was important to the finished spatial composition. The relationship between the central platform, freestanding logo feature, secondary backdrop and seating established the usable event environment.


    This coordination helped prevent the stage from appearing as an isolated scenic object. Instead, it became the centre of a planned system containing physical scenery, branding, furniture and production technology. Evolution Scenic’s role in designing and fabricating the stage environment provided the visual structure around which those additional elements could be organised.

    Installing the Environment at ICC Hall


    The installation took place within the ADSW VIP Majlis at ICC Hall in Abu Dhabi. 

    Accurate on-site set-out would have been central to the finished appearance. The platform, central graphics and freestanding circular feature needed to relate correctly to one another, while sufficient space had to remain for furniture, technical equipment and circulation.


    Temporary scenic components are normally developed so that they can be transported, assembled and finished within the available venue programme. Curved platforms may be divided into manageable sections, while larger freestanding features may use separate supporting and visible components.


    These construction approaches describe standard scenic methodology only.     CREATING A UNIFIED SCENIC ENVIRONMENT FOR EMIRATI CHILDREN’S DAY


    Emirati Children’s Day 2018 took place at Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi, with a programme that extended across educational workshops, outdoor activity areas, a dedicated media setting and a formal awards presentation inside the conference centre. Each area had a different practical purpose, but the physical environment still needed to feel connected.


    Evolution Creative developed the overall scenic design, using paper aeroplanes, illustration, bright fields of colour and simplified architectural forms to establish a recognisable visual language. Evolution Scenic then translated that design into the temporary structures, backdrops, signage and three-dimensional features required across the site.


    This distinction between design and fabrication is important. A graphic identity can work very effectively on a screen or printed page, but it has to be reconsidered once it becomes a wall, a suspended prop or a freestanding scenic structure. Shapes need thickness. Graphics need edges and joints. Large elements need internal support, transportable proportions and practical fixing points.


    The project therefore depended on more than reproducing a set of approved visuals. The scenic team had to understand how the design should behave in several different spaces and then develop a family of fabricated elements that could perform separate functions without losing their shared identity.

    TRANSLATING GRAPHIC DESIGN INTO PHYSICAL SCENERY


    The principal construction materials were MDF and plywood. These provided a practical and adaptable base for the project’s workshop walls, branded backdrops, stage scenery, photo features and freestanding structures.


    Sheet materials are particularly useful when a scenic project depends on clear graphic shapes and controlled architectural lines. They can form conventional wall panels, but they can also be cut into profiles, layered details, framed openings and more distinctive silhouettes. The same basic material system can therefore support several different environments without forcing every component to look identical.


    Because the scenic concept was developed within Evolution Creative, the transition into fabrication could be managed as an internal design-development process. The scenic team could review the original visual intent while resolving the dimensions, joints, material edges and support requirements needed for production.


    One of the questions we often ask at this stage is which parts of the design must remain exact and which can be adjusted to make the structure more practical. A graphic line may need to continue cleanly across several panels, while a shaped edge may need a slight change to strengthen the construction or make the component easier to transport. These adjustments should not alter the character of the design, but they can make a significant difference to the quality and reliability of the finished build.


    The project also crossed both indoor and outdoor areas. A workshop wall installed inside a tent faced different conditions from a freestanding media backdrop positioned in the park, while the awards-stage scenery needed to coordinate with screens, presentation furniture and the more formal setting of the conference centre.

    BUILDING THE WORKSHOP AND ACTIVITY ENVIRONMENTS


    The workshop areas were treated as purpose-built scenic environments rather than generic spaces divided by drape or rental screens. Custom walls introduced illustrated backgrounds, framed openings, colour fields and graphic details around the different activities.


    This approach allowed the scenic construction to perform several roles at once. The walls created backgrounds, separated activity zones and introduced enough architecture to make each workshop feel established within the larger temporary venue. They also provided a consistent surface for the illustrations and project identity.


    In practice, graphic coordination becomes more demanding when artwork extends across large fabricated structures. Titles, illustrated elements and feature shapes cannot be positioned without reference to panel breaks, corners and assembly joints. A character or line that appears correctly placed on a flat artwork file may be divided awkwardly once the structure is separated into transportable sections.


    The physical fabrication and artwork therefore needed to be considered together. Panel dimensions influenced graphic layouts, and the graphics influenced where joints could be positioned without interrupting important elements.


    The workshop environment also needed to remain practical. Openings and wall positions had to support the use of the space rather than reduce it to a decorative backdrop. Temporary scenic construction is most successful when it improves the organisation of the area as well as its appearance.

    CREATING THE MEDIA AND PHOTO ENVIRONMENTS


    Evolution Scenic also fabricated a dedicated outdoor media set. The structure combined a pale blue branded backdrop, illustrated camera graphics, bilingual event identity and a coordinated scenic floor.


    Treating the area as a proper scenic set rather than relying on portable signage created a much more controlled physical composition. The backdrop defined the frame, while the floor extended the design into the foreground and reduced the visual interruption created by the surrounding park environment.


    Outdoor media settings require particular attention to proportion. A backdrop that appears large in a workshop can feel comparatively small once installed in an open landscape. The structure needs enough width and height to contain the intended views, while the foreground treatment helps establish a complete visual zone rather than leaving the set as a single isolated wall.


    The scenic floor was therefore an important part of the media environment. It visually connected the backdrop to the area in front of it and allowed the graphic treatment to occupy more than one plane. This gave the set greater depth and helped it read as a temporary studio rather than a branded board standing on the ground.


    Elsewhere within the festival, Evolution Scenic fabricated a large freestanding photo environment based around an oversized illustrated paper aeroplane. Layered wall planes, a prominent speech-bubble graphic and a large aeroplane-shaped foreground element transformed the project identity into a three-dimensional scenic composition.


    This is a good example of the difference between displaying a graphic and building from it. The paper aeroplane had already been established as part of the visual language, but increasing its scale and turning it into a physical element gave it a different role.     The awards ceremony inside the conference centre required a more formal scenic treatment. Evolution Scenic fabricated a custom backdrop incorporating a large screen area, a shaped shield-like scenic feature with an illuminated outline and a branded presentation lectern.


    Although the tone changed, the stage still needed to belong to the same wider project. The visual identity could not simply be abandoned when the programme moved indoors. Instead, it was adapted into a more architectural composition suitable for a formal presentation environment.


    Stage backdrops often appear simple once completed, but the relationship between scenic construction and technical equipment needs careful control. A screen has fixed dimensions and viewing requirements, while the surrounding scenic elements must frame it without interfering with sightlines or appearing as unrelated additions.


    The shield-like feature and screen needed to read as parts of one composition. Their positions, heights and visual weight had to be balanced so that neither appeared secondary or disconnected. The illuminated outline introduced another layer, requiring the lighting effect to follow the shaped profile accurately while remaining integrated into the scenery.


    The lectern also needed to correspond with the backdrop. Although physically smaller, it occupied a prominent position and had to use the same graphic and material language. Details that appear minor in the workshop can become much more noticeable when placed alone at the front of a formal stage.

    FABRICATING AND SUSPENDING THE PAPER AEROPLANE


    One of the project’s most distinctive individual elements was the giant suspended paper aeroplane. Evolution Scenic fabricated the prop from plywood and completed it with a vinyl sticker finish.


    The form needed to appear crisp and graphic, retaining the folded geometry associated with a paper aeroplane while being large enough to function as an overhead scenic feature. Plywood provided a rigid base for the shape, while the vinyl finish created a controlled surface that could reproduce the intended graphic treatment.


    Suspended scenery introduces different considerations from freestanding walls and backdrops. The object must retain its shape while hanging, and the suspension points must connect securely without distorting the visible form.


    The aeroplane was suspended using eyebolts and metal ropes. These created the physical interface between the scenic object and the overhead suspension system.     Creating an Integrated Scenic Environment for the ADNOC AI Pledge Event


    The ADNOC AI Pledge Event was held at the ADNOC Energy Center in Abu Dhabi in 2024. The project was delivered as a brand launch and required a contemporary scenic environment capable of integrating staging, digital displays, branded architecture and technical production infrastructure. Evolution Scenic worked for the event producer and was responsible for design development, technical drawings, engineering, fabrication, graphics production, installation and dismantling.


    Every listed scenic element was fabricated by Evolution Scenic. The scope included a large timber-built wall with vinyl branding, a custom carpeted stage, side-wing décor walls, Forex screen cladding, branding walls, an MDF-and-acrylic “Energy AI” logo and technical hider counters.

    Developing the Scenic Package

    Creating Custom Learning Environments for Three Abu Dhabi Schools


    In August 2023, New Century Education selected Evolution Scenic to deliver customised scenic and functional elements across three schools in Abu Dhabi. The project extended beyond conventional decoration. It brought together large-scale scenic fabrication, custom joinery, library furniture, architectural wall treatments, acoustic panels and educational graphics. Each element needed to make the school interiors more visually engaging while still supporting the practical requirements of pupils, staff and visitors.


    The most prominent component was a tree-form library bookshelf measuring six metres high and 3.5 metres in diameter. Finished using spray-painted scenic surfaces, the structure was designed to become a central feature within the library environment.


    Around this focal point, Evolution Scenic installed circular seating with integrated cushions and additional long counters.     Turning a Tree Form into Functional Library Fabrication

    Transforming Walls into Educational Graphics


    Evolution Scenic designed and installed extensive graphic wall treatments across corridors, classrooms and shared school areas, combining school branding with educational content. The illustrated subjects included mathematics, measurement, space, transportation, marine life, personal values, language, sports, the five senses, plant growth and prehistoric life.


    Many of the graphics incorporated both Arabic and English content, bringing together illustrations, diagrams, labels and headings across complete wall elevations. Rather than functioning as individual signs, the treatments transformed large sections of wall into integrated educational displays.


    The scale of the graphic compositions required careful coordination during installation. Long visual sequences had to remain aligned while working around doors, electrical devices, air-conditioning controls and other fixed architectural elements. Geometric branding was also applied across entrance atriums and upper-level wall surfaces to create a consistent visual language throughout the schools.


    The graphic scope extended to the exterior through a large illustrated mural incorporating themes related to heritage, education, technology and Arabic calligraphy. Together, the interior graphics, branded surfaces and exterior mural formed a coordinated visual layer that complemented the wider fabrication and interior works delivered by Evolution Scenic.

    Managing Finishes for a Child-Friendly Environment


    The school environment placed particular importance on the preparation and finishing of fabricated elements. Evolution Scenic prioritised child-friendly finishes across the delivered components, ensuring that the completed work was suitable for spaces used regularly by young students.


    Painted components were fully cured before delivery, while treated items were ventilated to reduce the presence of residual fumes before entering the school interiors. This made finishing an important part of the wider production process rather than simply a final visual treatment.


    The requirement influenced the relationship between workshop fabrication, finishing and installation. Sufficient time needed to be allowed for coatings and treated surfaces to cure and ventilate properly before the completed components were transported and installed on site.


    This approach reflected the different requirements of fabrication intended for an occupied educational environment. Alongside appearance and durability, the finishing process needed to consider the suitability of the completed elements for everyday use within classrooms, libraries and other student areas.

    Installing the Fit-Out Across Three Schools


    Evolution Scenic delivered the fit-out across three separate schools in Abu Dhabi, coordinating fabrication, transport and installation across a range of interior environments.


    Each school presented different room dimensions, architectural interfaces and site conditions. The tree bookshelves, counters, seating, wall panels and graphic treatments therefore had to be installed according to their intended locations and coordinated with the surrounding architecture.


    The large tree bookshelf represented the most substantial interior installation. At six metres high and 3.5 metres in diameter, its scale required careful coordination of access, assembly and working height, while the wider installation also included slotted wall panels, acoustic treatments, reception counters and educational graphics.


    Delivering the complete scope across three schools required close coordination between workshop production, finishing, transport and site installation. The completed fit-out brought together large-scale scenic features, functional joinery and integrated wall treatments within one coordinated delivery package.

    The tree-form bookshelf created a strong focal point within the libraries, combining the scale of an architectural installation with integrated book storage. Circular cushioned seating supported the surrounding reading areas, while long library counters and entrance registration counters introduced additional functional elements for everyday use.


    Slotted wall panels added texture and architectural detail across selected areas, while custom-shaped acoustic panels introduced both sound control and colour within the science rooms. Educational graphics extended the treatment across corridors and classrooms, transforming complete wall elevations into large-format learning surfaces.


    Together, these elements demonstrated Evolution Scenic’s ability to combine scenic fabrication, custom manufacturing, functional joinery, graphic production and site installation within an educational environment. The full scope was completed across all three schools ahead of schedule, with painted and treated finishes fully cured and ventilated before delivery for use within spaces occupied by young students.
